Eating our wedding cake - 1 year later

So this is kind of a niche idea, but I still feel it's worth mentioning. Most of my friends and family chose to not eat their wedding cake on their one-year anniversary because they thought it was a gross tradition. But I'm here to tell you why I think you should do it like we did.

My husband and I got married in September of 2020 and celebrated our one-year anniversary this past September. For us it was a no-brainer, we wanted to keep the tradition alive by eating the top of our wedding cake one year later. Seeing the box in the freezer over and over again was always a small reminder of our amazing wedding day. Planning this dessert date really helped to make our one-year anniversary feel very special. Especially since paper gifts can feel a little underwhelming. (I got him a roll of toilet paper)

If you are anything like me, you can be a major planner. I decided to ask my cake baker to save my wedding top prior to our wedding. She outdid my planning by making a second cake top designed exclusively for the one-year anniversary. This way we didn't have to worry about it on the day of the wedding. This always helped because she was able to heavily wrap the cake.

Our cake was wrapped in ten layers of clear wrap and two layers of tin foil. We then kept it in our freezer all year and never touched it once. On the big day, we unwrapped it and then let it defrost for about 20 minutes. It was a lot of cake and we only ended up eating one large piece of the cake. Once it was fully defrosted, we were able to cut off a piece of the cake without totally running the visual appeal.

Don't get us wrong, we were very hesitant. The idea of eating a year-old cake was a little weird. Even our cute pup didn't know if she wanted to beg. Apparently, it didn't have a strong smell. But we are both alive to tell the tale! We decided if we were going to die, we were going to die together. It was actually very tasty and we ate the entire slice! I mean, it was as good as a year-old cake can be. A little dry. But hey it's good luck for our marriage and I'm still feeling pretty lucky because of it! This is such a small and simple way to keep the romance alive within a marriage. If you are considering if you should or shouldn't eat the cake. I say eat the cake!
