Beer Olympics

The only way to have a successful Beer Olympics is to PLAN. Luckily for you, I’ve already done all the planning.

The basic rules of the event include:
  • Teams of 2 or 4 players representing a country of their choice.
    • We had 6 teams of 4 people. Our countries were the U.S.A., Ireland, Germany, England, Canada, and Australia. It’s also a lot more fun if everyone dresses up representing their country, so try to encourage that! I also made a rule that every team had to have at least ONE of each gender to keep it fair.
  • All teams compete in drinking games to win points
    • A general rule I found was to plan for as many games for as many teams you have. Example: you have five teams, you play 5 games. We played 10 games in total, and it was probably too many. Depending on how heavy drinkers you have coming, it should depend on how many games you pick.
  • The team with the most points at the end of the event wins.
    • We gave out gold, silver and bronze medals to the top three teams.

We started at about 4 PM and ended around 8 PM. Pro Tip #1, have snacks throughout the event, but DO NOT take a “food break”. If you do this, everyone will lose their competitive drive and the games will dye out. Instead, have pizza delivered right after the games as a nice post-event celebration (as well as a sobering tactic.)

For us, it was HOT. We had water misters and ice buckets all throughout the yard.

We also made our large Recycling can accessible, so people weren’t just throwing beer cans on the ground. By the end of our event, our recycling can was completely full of just beer cans.

I told every team to bring 24 to 36 12oz cans of their preferred beer. For us, this was the perfect amount. If your friends are less of drinkers or more drinkers, you can adjust this number as needed. I consider my friends to be “average drinkers”.

Pro Tip #2: You HAVE to have a Ref. I thought I could get away with “having everyone help ref each other”. No. That’s a hard no. You must have someone who isn’t on a team, knows all the rules, and is okay yelling at a bunch of drunk people. Once everyone starts playing the games, it gets really hard to control 20+ drunk, competitive idiots. Having that one person everyone respects will save you lots of stress.

Some other rules we included (which you don’t have to use) were:
  • Points will be deducted from cheating teams
  • If you throw up anywhere other than a trash can or toilet, 3 points will be deducted.
  • If you run out of beer, your team will be deducted
  • Scoring order of WAVE ONE will determine who you play in WAVE TWO
  • Every player must play one of the four 1 player games
  • Every player dressed representing their country will receive 1 extra point for their team

It took me about six months to really lock down these 10 games. They’ve been researched, tested and completed. And honestly, a few weren’t that great even after all that planning. So moral to the story, it’ll never be perfect. When a lot of competitive people come together and alcohol is involved… it’ll always be a little of a hot mess. But check out what we did anyway, and then make it your own!

Here is a list of the games we played:

WAVE ONE

  1. Chug The Mug - 4 players: Every team plays at once, 4 beers are all poured into 1 mug, team members must work together to chug the entire mug. The first team to finish wins.
  2. One Blow Joe - 1 player: Blow a ping pong ball off beer top into horseshoe ring. After hitting checkmark, must chug said beer. Lastly, the player needs to blow the ball from horseshoe A to horseshoe B. If the ball falls off, players restart from the checkpoint. Fastest time wins **Example is in video**
  3. Straw Stack - 4 players: As a team, you must drink 4 cans of beer entirely. Then with only a straw and your mouth, the team must stack all 4 cans. The first team to finish wins
  4. Ice Cube Suck - 1 Player (can’t be the player from game 2): drink beer in an ice cube tray via a straw. The first team to finish wins
  5. Solo Bong - 4 Players: Every team plays at once. Two balls per team. Once you make a cup, switch with other players. Must drink your own cups. The first team to finish win.

WAVE TWO
  1. Survivor Flip Cup - 4 players: Losing team loses 1 player per round, last man standing is winning team.
  2. Dizzy Bat - 1 player (can not be players from game 2 or 4): Chug a beer, spin x3, and hit empty can. Must hit can over the marked marker. The first team to finish wins
  3. Solo Cup Stuck - 4 players: Player first chugs a solo cup of beer. Then the player must hold the solo cup with only the balloon in mouth. The player must complete the course without dropping a cup. Then passing the cup to the next player. All players must complete the course to win. The first team to finish wins
  4. Balance On A Bag - 1 play (Can’t be the player from game 2, 4 or 7) Grab a paper bag with your mouth. While standing on one leg. You have 1 minute to try. Make the bag smaller and smaller each round. Last man alive wins. **Example is in video**
  5. Rage Cage - 4 players: Every team plays, last man standing wins

For scoring, we did it how the internet said you’re supposed to…. you take the number of teams you have, and award that many points for first in each event (6 teams=6 points for first, 1 point for last). But honestly, it was super confusing. I recommend just giving 1st place 1 point, 2nd place 2 points, etc and just playing like Golf. Whoever has the LEAST amount of points at the end of the event, wins.
