Beer Olympics - Game Ideas & More

I've written about throwing a beer Olympics in the past. If you are new to the beer Olympics world, feel free to check out my older Beer Olympics post for even more beer Olympic tips.

https://thebreezyguide.blogspot.com/2020/01/beer-olympics.html

Because the number one thing you need in order to have a successful beer Olympics is to plan the crap out of it and be well prepared.

Here is a little video recap I made for your visual pleasure....

Here is a list of the ground rules we had for this year's game:

  • Teams must have 4 players and MUST have at least 1 girl and 1 guy to participate. If you don’t have 4 players or aren’t a CO-ED team, you will be penalized every game
    • We had one team this year that only had 3 players instead of 4.We let them still play, they just had to drink a little more and play a little harder than everyone else. They still were able to walk away as the bronze champions, so good for them.

  • Each completed team may claim a country they want to represent. Your team will get bonus points for dressing up as your claimed country
    • This year we had the USA, England, Ireland, Afghanistan, and Germany. I like them to have team spirit, so I give extra points for teams who dress up. This year every team dressed up, which made the energy lots of fun
  • Every team will bring their own beer. Each team needs to have AT LEAST 24 (12 oz) cans of beer. Must be carbonated, stelzers are allowed.
    • I had a few teams try to pull a fast one on me and bring Spiked Arnold Palmers. Collectively we decided none carbonated drinks were too easy to chug, so we didn't allow it. We did allow seltzers that were carbonated (White Claw, Vizzy, etc) but you are more than welcome to ban those too.
  • If you run out of beer mid-competition, YOUR TEAM WILL BE PENALIZED. So make sure to bring enough beer
    • This has never been a problem for us. Everyone usually brings extras, but if your party starts to drink too many while not playing a game, you might want to remind them of this.
  • Every player must play one of the four 1 player games - I'll explain this more later
  • We will draw rocks to determine playing orders
    • I painted rocks with each countries flag. They were a big hit and a few ended up on the gram. #freeadvertisment
  • Be sure to arrive ON TIME. For every game you miss, you will get last place
    • I had one team show up late to the first game so they got last place, If you wait around too long, people start drinking too much, and then it's impossible to get them to play the games correctly. Never forget Beer Olympics is like herding cats.
  • The referee may penalize you during any game for cheating. If you act out, the ref may also “Ice” you at anytime
    • I had to Ice sassy players every year. Don't feel bad, the colored sugar of a Smirnoff ice always gets them to hush up
  • If you throw up anywhere other than a trash can (recycling can is NOT a trash can), your team will be penalized
  • If you touch the garden, your team will be penalized
    • I had a kid fall into the garden this year... I gave him a 1 point penalty and an ICE. He felt bad, so I didn't want to go too hard on him.
  • Scoring will be like golf, the team with the lowest points will win
    • Here is a picture of our scoreboard. The team with the lowest points (aka the more wins) Won. This year in our case it was England!

I was the Ref this year. I've sometimes done it, and sometimes made others do it. Some people like doing it, and some are terrible at it... So keep that in mind! It has to be someone with a loud voice but also won't crack under the pressure. Also needs to know the rules for every game like it's their full time job.

I made this shirt for myself since I wanted to dress up but didn't have a country to represent.

If you want one, feel free to order it from my Etsy shop. CrapToCrafts

Here is a picture of the snack ring I made. Surprisingly, the pickles went the fastest. The torch is an old vase I spray painted gold. It turned out super cute and I'm now using it as everyday house decor!

This year - 2021 - was my best year yet. Each year I learn from mistakes and evolve.

The year the biggest change was I added a cash prize to heat up the competition. Oh baby did it do just that. Each team really wanted to get 1st place and the $70 overall cash prize.

We set it up that every 4-player, co-ed team to pay $20 as the buy-in. We had five teams total, so our overall cash prize was $100. I gave 3rd place half the buy-in, $10. I gave 2nd all of what they paid, $20. And first place took home the rest, $70. You could easily charge more of buy-in and have a bigger cash prize, but my friends are broke so we didn't do that. Also pro-tip: I printed out my Venmo QR code so no one could get out of paying.

I also made these cute trophies out of empty beer cans and gold spray paint. 10/10 recommend, they were super easy to make via tuck tape and were very popular!

I try to change up and add new games every year. Here is a list of the games we played this year.

This year everyone had a ton of fun. Like I said earlier, I'm always changing and evolving. Hopefully, next year will be even better. Write in the comments game suggestions you've done in the past. I'm always on the lookout for the next fun ideas! Also, check back here next year for even more game ideas.

Thanks so much!!
