My husband and I are currently building a house in the Daybreak community here in Salt Lake valley. If you know anything about the Daybreak community then you might know just what this community is like. Most people say, "Stepford Wives" vibes. Which I still need to watch, but yes from an outside view, it does seem a little weird. But now that we've had a small glimpse into the inside view, we couldn't be any more excited! More information about the Daybreak community to come after we actually move in.
As for today, I'm focusing on house colors. When it comes to building a house, you get to pick all things related to the house. And one of the biggest selections you'll pick is the color. The color of the walls, the color of the floors, the exterior colors, the door colors, all the colors. So many colors. This can be extremely overwhelming. Adding another layer of conflict for us... the Daybreak community has a lot of rules and restrictions on what color you can have your house be. They won't allow the same color to be on the same street. Our house is the last to be built on our street, so our color choices were pretty small.
Interestingly enough, after a lot of research I've discovered, there's a lot that can go into picking the perfect color for a home. There are different factors to consider including what direct your home faces if you're a morning or night person and even personality traits about your family! Here is the general lowdown of what I've learned so far. If you are thinking about building a home or just painting your house. This might be beneficial to you as well!
I'll start by describing cool tones verse warm tones. We knew we wanted to do a blue for our exterior. Blue colors are considered cool tones. While warm tones are more like yellows and reds. Most colors are hybrid colors also. For our interior walls, we went with a cool-toned white. It a white was a small hint of blue. This ties into our cool-toned exterior.
I didn't know this at the time of our color selection, but cool toned colors wash out on exteriors at noon. So basically when the sun is shining the color we picked looks a little bit like toothpaste. But later in the evening the color cools off again and turns back into a blue/green/gray. This is only because we have an east-facing home. If we had a west-facing home, it would instead wash out in the evening hours. Personally, I think it still turned out okay in our east-facing case. My family isn't really early risers, so it's better for us that the colors look better in the later hours of the day. Online I found that north-facing homes have it the best, their colors never wash out.
If you are leaning more towards a warm-toned color for your exterior, you won't have the problem of getting washed out of an east or west-facing home. But, on the flip side, you're color might look a little too exposed on a north-facing home. Weirdly enough, I couldn't find a lot of information for south-facing homes. So either all colors work or no colors work for them. The best thing to do is a small paint test before painting the entire exterior. Make sure to check back at different times throughout the day to truly see the color.
The same will go for the interior of a home. If you have a room with east-facing windows, these rooms will have the best cool toned colors in the later hours. In our case, we are doing a cool-toned white for the dining room and living room. But then a warmer toned white in the bedroom and bathroom. I'm hoping this will help to keep me awake and refreshed in the mornings. Yet relaxed and able to rewind in the evenings. This is why we have different spaces in our home with different intentions. I'll keep you updated if I think it made any difference. We don't have any accent wall colors in mind yet... Probably a deep brown wood wall in the living room. Or a warm-toned tile in the bathroom. Haven't decided yet, maybe I'll do both! Photos to follow when I'm done!
Sadly in our case, the exterior color isn't exactly what we had in mind. I wish I would have done a little bit more research before pulling the trigger. It's not the absolute worst, and I know I'll grow to love it. It could for sure be a lot worst. There are plenty of homes in our neighborhood with the weirdest of colors. It's hard to pick a color that no one else has. As mentioned earlier, the Daybreak community will only approve certain colors. So everyone in our neighborhood also feels the pain of having to pick only certain colors. On our street, we had reds, greens, whites, greys, blacks, and ever a bright purple. It's fun to see everyone's personality shine through. Personally, I like the Daybreak community has some rules regarding the colors. Now every street has all different homes of different colors reflecting something unique. It's like we are all exactly different. So yes, still very Stepford wives vibes!
Regardless we are very excited! We move in later this month, so more updates to follow.
Thanks for reading!
