The Gallivan Center, this is one of those amazing places that hold great adventures for both boozy and family-friendly fun. Ice skating in the middle of the tall city buildings is nostalgic to me. It's the most romantic date night, a fun day with the kids, or in my favorite case, the perfect reason to get day drunk with the girls.
The Gallivan Center is located directly in downtown Salt Lake City in between Main Street and State street. In the summer months, you'll find summer concerns, pickleball nets, and food trucks. In the winter months, you'll find an ice skating rink and beautiful Christmas lights. The rink is free for anyone to come and use. But unless you carry around your own ice skates, you can rent that inside for a small fee.
If you are anything like us, your day will be filled with lots of falls and laughs and of course, beers. No, sadly you can't get any sort of alcohol at the rink. But that doesn't stop us from taking a little detour pre and post-skate. This time around we started our girl's date at Grace's. This is a short 2 block walk west of the Gallivan Center. Here you can share bottles of mimosas for pretty dang cheap and delicious food options that don't have the "downtown tax".
Post skate we headed to Down Under. This was the first time we've been here, but if you're looking for a quick shot and a beer, just across the street from the Gallivan Center, Down Under is the spot for you.
You can also enjoy this ice skating rink at night! This is a perfect date night idea. The downtown Christmas lights are amazing to walk through and enjoy. The rink plays music and glows. The downtown city buildings will shimmer. The hot cocoa will burn your throat and you won't be able to feel your nose. In my opinion, this makes for the best type of memories. (these pictures were taken right before my now-husband asked me to be his Girlfriend)
Just on the opposite side of the Wells Fargo building (west of the Galivan Center) on Main Street, you'll have access to the downtown Trax. From this station, you can ride north to City Creek Mall, Vivint Arena (where the Utah Jazz play), and the Gateway Mall. All of these stops are within the "free fare zone" so feel free to use the Trax to explore the city all day long for free!
Make sure to check out my other posts of more booze and/or family-friendly activities you can try too at the Gallivan Center and downtown. Thanks for reading! I hope you have fun getting day drunk too
